10 Reasons You Shouldn't Quit Art

Sat Jun 6, 2015, 5:25 AM
You know i keep my journals short, so i'll jump right to it.

1. When you get an idea for a character, or an illustration or a comic, you can just draw it. You don't have to browse and see if anyone else drew it already, or commission other artists to do it.

2. If you get really good at art, your favorite artist might watch you back.

3. You might eventually get paid for it.

4. Because even if there's tons of art out there, and many great artists, no one, and i mean NO ONE can ever draw what you draw. There can be similar ideas, but only you can bring your particular flavor of art to life.

5. The awesome comments. The better you get at art, the more awesome and elaborate comments you get. Who doesn't want to get praised?

6. Art trades with really good artists!

7. Because quitting is lame.

8. Because when IRL people ask you what you do and you say you're an artist, you get the most interesting reactions. It never gets old.

9. Because you get to browse the internet and look at art and call it research.

10. Because the act of creating, thinking and drawing is awesome. You probably wanna quit because you don't get enough attention, no favs etc, but before that, you drew for yourself, because you simply enjoyed doing it. But somewhere along the way, you forgot.

R-E-M-E-M-B-E-R.

Yuuza out! :iconsokkawatertribeplz:

Many thanks for your encourageous words partner! I was in that situation some months ago where you want to throw all your work away and never come back, but like you said, I do this for myself and because I enjoy doing it! :happybounce:

I don't post my art on DA but I do take art as an elective for school. I used to love art, but now I've lost it... I lost my passion & enthusiasm I had for it. That's something I can't get back.

I'm still quitting art, but idk what I'll take as an elective now

I want to quit drawing so bad. I've worked a short 3 years to improve my art and gotten very little results. I realize that good art takes a long time, much more than 3 years, to get decent at, but it's very discouraging to have something in your head and not be able to draw it. Math, absolutely no problem. Athletics, heck yes! Drawing... Lol nope. I know everyone goes through this, but it's especially frustrating for me right now. Every time I work up the motivation to post something on here (deviantArt), I see other people's work, people I admire for their art, and think 'Haha, just kidding. I will never be as good as them, so why even try?' I'm being realistic when I say that I don't have the time or talent to develop good artistic skills or my own unique art style, and that for some reason really depresses me. My sister is very artistic and is able to draw whatever is in her head very well and often times I get jealous of her abilities, which I know is a horrible and unfair thing to do, but I can't seem to help it. I dunno. Sorry for this whole big rant thing, I just had to get that off my chest.

Omg you make me emotional... As a person very passionate about art, it breaks my heart every time I see people quitting. Some others say it's only a hobby and others say that it's a waste of time. It is quite tragic how people see art and what they think about it, especially when you want to take it as a career or want to earn money from it.

Now I'm currently studying multimedia, and it feels so good to be in an environment of supportive and artistic people. I've been hurt a lot of times about what people say about my skill, works and simply art in general. It's like stabbing a big knife to your heart while some feels like needles being pushed through your chest one by one. It's actually suffocating for me. It has been really rough but as I think about it, art has been family for me. It makes me happy. And no matter how difficult it has been to me, to the point of not doing art for more than a year, I've never thought of quitting it. It's like giving half of my life. Even more than half of me.  I may seem exaggerating but Art is so significant for me. It built me as a person. I won't know who I am if I'd give it up. So I really love that you made this journal for others to think twice about quitting it. Thank you :)

thank you for posting this. My reason for wanting to quit was dealing with a narcissist who wanted her way with everything in rpgs to the point where she started controlling my characters and godmodded them into characters i never wanted them to be in rpgs then eventually stole them for herself, using "co ownership" as an excuse for her selfish behavior then turned around and accused me of character theft, which is something she had done. This lead to the end of an 8 year friendship and a five year character ownership dispute which I ended up losing in the end. I felt so traumatized from the abuse she put me through to gain ownership of my characters that I lost interest in drawing and nearly quit art for good. It wasn't until this year i started drawing again but I still have trouble finishing what I started....

Ah, yes, number 1. I can't overstate the epicness of the moment I crossed from perpetual frustration, to actually being able to illustrate the images and people in my head, the way I saw them. I'm not a notably good artist, but I'm good enough to make what /I/ want to see, and that's good enough for me! :D

Deviantart is a website, i am talking here about art ^^ You can do art in private, you can post it on the internet, hide it, show it to people, whatever. The point was, not to stop doing it ^^

I agree with this...I can't give up :D

There's a lot I need to learn, and a LOT I need to practice XD, but I'll do the best I can :) Writing is the same, although it's a lot more difficult to write for people since it generally takes a lot longer to write a story than a single image ^^; People also tend to like art because it's a quick 30 second or a minute look to see, while a story has to take at least a few minutes to read all the way through :(

That is true. I am also an artist and a writer, and i can vouch for that!
Art is far easier to consume ^^ But on the other hand, writing has something art doesn;t, art can never have such a great impact on society as a book can. I've never felt emotions while watching art, as strong as i feel them while i am reading.

Point 5 is pretty sad. It is true that the more popular and skilled you are, the more feedback you get. Sad thing is that beginners are those who needs more feedback than people who are already great. And beginners doesn't recieve any.

That is indeed sad. When i joined deviantart, my skill wasn't that great, and i got very few comments and favs. But i wanted them so bad, i checked my mail so often ;u; I was so happy when i got a longer comment :iconcryforever: I would have given a leg to get as many comments as i get now, even for a day (ok, maybe not a leg, but yo get the picture)
And now, when i finally get a ton of comments, i don't have the time to read them. Back then i had all the time in the world ;A; i had no comments to read and fill my time with.
By the time i got popular, i also got busy. It's like a vicious circle. I wish i could go back in time and give myself a bunch of comments from the ones i have now, to even things out a bit :lmao:

Well, written. I was sometimes seriously at the edge of quitting art. Because somtimes I'd spend SO MUCH time into an artwork and then it simply wouldn't get any damn attention OTL. Or when jealousy got over me... ughh... yeeah, but then I thought what else I'd do when I don't do art XD. It's very frustrating sometimes.... but there are also happy times too when I FINALLY achieve something or look back how I've improved.

Draw everyday even if it isn't a project. Scribble for all I care. Just make sure that your art means something to you. We are our worse critic. Shut that voice down and listen to that inner child. That voice that tells you that you can and you will and that Art is everything to you. Never lose sight of what makes you happy.

"We are our worst critic" that is very true. The very reason I have a writer's block. "That won't work" "this is shit" "Oh, come on bro you can do better than that" the last one though meaning well is why most of my stuff never get released. If "He" isn't happy with it it won't go.

It always makes me sad when I see a new artist that has art that shows room for improvement and I can totally see them going somewhere with their talents...and they just end up quitting. :(

Another thing I'd mention is that creative criticism is a GOOD thing, and it's good to get it every once in a while. I think talent can't just grow on compliments alone. It's good to have someone guide and help you master your abilities to become even greater. :)
I've had two very blunt but VERY good critical feedback in my past. In middle school people liked what I would draw, but back then I would copy an image (like looking at a video game character and drawing it exactly the same way, with slight differences). A fellow schoolmate told me that all I do is copy. It hurt, but he was right. So I stopped copying and started drawing freestyle. And in high school I've had an art teacher tell me all I draw are dragons. This is true, cuz I LOVE dragons, it was all I'd ever draw. I still draw dragons, but I've been slowly drawing other kinds of animals, even trying to practice drawing backgrounds. I'm not very good at backgrounds, but I know over time I'll get better at it.
